The Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy (RNoAFA) is the Air Force service academy of the Norwegian Defence University College and educates future officers for the Royal Norwegian Air Force and the Norwegian Armed Forces. Guided by its motto, “For Luftforsvarets fremtid” (“For the Future of the Royal Norwegian Air Force”), the Academy develops the people, knowledge and professional competence needed for tomorrow’s air force.
Established in 1949, five years after the creation of the Royal Norwegian Air Force, the Academy has developed alongside Norway’s contribution to NATO and European security. Since 1961, it has been located in Trondheim, combining military education, academic studies and leadership development.
The Academy offers a three-year Bachelor programme in Military Studies that prepares future officers for service in the Royal Norwegian Air Force and the Norwegian Armed Forces. In addition, it delivers professional military education throughout the career spectrum, including the Advanced NCO Course and the Norwegian Armed Forces’ Mentor Programme, which develops military leaders and leadership processes at the highest levels of the Armed Forces. The Academy also contributes faculty and expertise to the Norwegian Defence University College’s Master in Warfighting and Military Operations.
As part of the Norwegian Defence University College, the Academy integrates education, research and professional military development. Research-based education is a cornerstone of its approach, ensuring that military practice is informed by scholarship and critical inquiry. The Academy contributes to the advancement of knowledge through research, conferences and professional forums focused on leadership and air power, and actively disseminates knowledge to both military and civilian audiences. In doing so, it supports informed public debate and the responsible exercise of academic freedom within the field of defence and security.
The Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy actively supports the objectives of the European Air Force Academies (EUAFA) and the European Initiative for the Exchange of Young Officers Inspired by Erasmus (EMILYO). Through cadet exchanges, instructor mobility, common modules and professional cooperation, the Academy contributes to strengthening interoperability, mutual understanding and a shared professional culture among future European air force officers.
Located in Trondheim, the Academy benefits from close cooperation with operational air units, allied partners and civilian academic institutions, enabling cadets to combine military professionalism, academic excellence and practical leadership experience throughout their education
